Many businesses in California have led the way in looking beyond finanical profits as measures for success, recognizing our responsibility toward both the human community and the global environment. They are showing us how business can serve employees so they can thrive and play a part in doing good in the world.
Some businesses are beginning to consider compassion as a commodity in the service of society. There is a multitude of research being done here in California which is helping us see that when companies help employees actualize their higher level of needs as expressed in Maslow’s Hierarchy, then a sense of ownership is established, and productivity and employee retention are increased. And, when companies respect their employees and clients and demonstrate kindness, then loyalty becomes more deeply ingrained.
Two of the country's premier instutes for the study of ehtics and compassion are in the San Francisco Bay Area: Santa Clara University’s Markkula Center for Applied Ethics and Stanford University’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE). They sponsored an event with the Dalai Lama, along with the CEO of Dignity Health, Lloyd Dean: Business, Ethics, and Compassion: A Dialogue with the Dalai Lama, some of which you can view here.
